A little while ago, I got in touch with Poppy, a local makeup artist. I wanted to see if she would be interested in collaborating with me, and if she’d be up for letting me accompany her on a makeup appointment in exchange for some photographs for her Instagram and social media. She told me that her sister-in-law was having her engagement ceremony, or Nikkah, soon, and that I was more than welcome to photograph her getting ready. A few weeks later, it transpired that their original photographer for the event was unavailable, so she asked if I would be available to shoot the whole day. I immediately agreed, having never photographed a ceremony such as this.
So, on Sunday the 5th, I headed to their house to photograph Habiba getting ready for her Nikkah. Though the house was quiet to begin with, it was soon filled with members of their family, and got hectic pretty quickly. After a few hours, we drove down to the Mercure hotel, and, after everyone had sat down for some delicious food, the ceremony began. The couple exchanged their rings, draped flower necklaces over one another, and received gifts from their family members. Finally, they cut the cake, and they and their family took it turns to feed each other mouthfuls of it.
It was a beautiful ceremony with lots of colour and sparkling jewellery. Though it was an event I’d never even attended before let alone photographed, I am thrilled with the images that I got. Here is a small selection of the photographs (please click to expand each image).
